Your regular columnist Daphne Caruana Galizia intrigues me. I am intrigued because the more I read the venomous pieces she writes on your paper, the more I compare her to a spiteful worker who harbours a grudge against another co-worker and, being unable to find anything to criticise in his work, resorts to personal attacks. I’m sure many of your readers have encountered this situation at their place of work. It is a very nasty situation, when people are attacked, not because their work is found wanting, but because the attacker wants to denigrate them for no rational reason.

So, the attack becomes personal. In other words, the person is ridiculed. And the perpetrator doesn’t realise that she herself – bodily or visually – could be as much subject to other people’s scorn and ridicule she tries to heap on her victims

Ms Caruana Galizia gives me the impression she is fixated on the venom she wants to spit at Dr Alfred Sant, because she cannot find anything to criticise in the policies he is putting forward to the Maltese people. Because his policies have the potential to succeed, because his personal integrity is untarnished, and his determination to make this country work is undeniable. The more personal she gets, the less her faith in a PN victory this time round.

There is really something wrong in the way she keeps on harping about a perceived defect. I say “perceived” because, wonder of wonders, it is only she who attacks what she considers a defect. Isn’t it strange that this woman becomes fixated on a defect that only she perceives as such? Isn’t it strange that of all the columnists writing on the papers, it is only she who thinks that wearing a toupee is not only a defect but also affects the way politics are done? Is it a defect to wear a toupee?

To my understanding, and to the understanding of the vast majority of level-headed people, wearing a toupee is nothing out of the ordinary. Needless to say, what is of import in politics is not what one finds on the skin, but what one finds under the skin. In this respect, Alfred Sant is unbeatable.
