Labour And the independent media

Malta Independent Sunday, 14 October 2007, 00:00 Last update: about 14 years ago

From Mr M. G. Abdilla

Noel Grima, editor of this newspaper, revealed that Labour International Secretary Joe Mifsud phoned him because he was irked that this newspaper was about to publish an article by Daphne Caruana Galizia regarding Labour Leader Alfred Sant. Dr Mifsud has since filed an affidavit claiming that at no point in time did he threaten Mr Grima.

Whether Joe Mifsud threatened the editor or not is irrelevant. What is worrying is that this top Labour Party official phoned the editor the day before the article was published. This speaks volumes.

It clearly shows that Labour finds absolutely no difficulty in spying and interfering in the independent media. This incident is a throwback to the days when Labour was very hostile to the independent media.
