Sometimes we’re lucky, sometimes we’re not. It was pouring heavily on Saturday evening and there was a huge storm just after midnight on Sunday. Imagine what would have happened if we had experienced such bad weather a week before, when Notte Bianca activities were being held in Valletta. The event would either have been a total flop, or people would have been stranded in the heavy floods.
Each time it rains heavily, material including stones is carried away by the waters and often ends up in the middle of the road, remaining there even after the waters have subsided. This could be extremely dangerous for drivers. Would it not be possible for the government and/or local councils to have teams of people who drive around to remove such hazards as soon as the floods stop?
A truckload of construction material was dumped at Wied il-Mizieb some days ago. It is so unfortunate that in spite of the facilities that exist for people to dispose of their waste in a correct way and without harming the environment still find it more comfortable to throw away their waste in such a manner. It is a real pity that some people do not have any civic sense at all.
The Maltese national team was beaten in Hungary last Saturday, and Moldova’s draw at home against Turkey meant that the local side is once again bottom of the table. Malta will be playing against Moldova on Wednesday, and has a great chance of winning the game following the 1-1 draw obtained away against the same team. Local football-lovers are urged to go to Ta’ Qali national stadium to support the national side.
Naxxar Road in San Gwann – the part closest to the two bank branches – is being dug up. Now, this area is a traffic nightmare on Saturdays, and one therefore can imagine the confusion that reigned there on Saturday morning. Why does it take so long to finish a job? Work in major traffic arteries should be started and completed within the shortest time possible to create as little inconvenience as possible.
Also on Saturday morning, there was a huge traffic jam of cars on the Regional Road, in the direction from Paceville to Msida. The reason for this is that there was a 10-metre swimming pool right on the bridge, the water accumulating between the concrete blocks after some heavy rainfall. It is not the first time that this has happened, and yet nothing is done to solve the problem.
Some people are really cheeky. They double park their car and go into a shop to buy something. The owner of the car which is blocked enters the shop to ask, politely, who is the owner of the car blocking his. The latter says “it’s mine”, but continues shopping as if nothing happened. It takes him another 10 minutes to buy what he wants to buy, pay the bill and, with no hurry at all, drive off. Really cheeky.
The road leading down from Naxxar to San Gwann, especially the part closest to San Gwann, is in a terrible state. Parts of the road have simply collapsed, while there are many potholes too. Of course, this part of the road cannot be redone until the Manwel Dimech bridge is completed. So drivers should expect further deterioration before anything is done to rectify the situation.
