Reference is made to the article entitled “Reform in adult training centres ‘making things worse’ - MLP”, (TMID, 11 October). The Family and Social Solidarity Ministry would like to point out that the improvements taking place are based on an evaluation aimed at upgrading the current service provision, in order to safeguard the interests of persons with disability and their families.

In April, Agency Sapport was designated as the entity responsible for the management of these centres and for assuring a professional and quality service to all the beneficiaries.

In each year of this legislature, the government invested in the services offered by Sapport for persons with disability. This proves the commitment and the dedication which the Nationalist government has towards disability issues. This year the Budget allocated to Sapport which for the first time included also the day care centres for persons with disability, has risen by almost a quarter of a million from the previous year. We have also seen an increase in service-users, which is clear proof of the positive reception of the service.

Sapport is in constant consultation with the government to ensure the continuous improvement of the service offered, so that no member of society is excluded. At present, there is an ongoing training programme for employees working in these centres, giving them an opportunity to improve their performance and gain more knowledge and expertise. Apart from the provision of training, a skills audit is being finalised to identify the training needs of all employees. Two occupational therapists have just taken up employment at the day care centres.

With regard to the food, all ingredients are chosen in consultation between the employees (who are licensed in food handling) and the nutritionists who are the best persons to decide on what food should be given to the clients. The parents and the parents’ committee have met Sapport officials and were informed about the plans of the centres, including food preparation.

We would also like point out that, in the circular sent by the head of the centre, there is no mention at all that parents were to be responsible for the administration of medicines to their children.

Sapport is fully committed to continue improving and reforming the service offered. With determination and a strong political will to listen to all concerned, we will continue to work in the best interests of persons with disability, who will always be at the centre of every decision taken.
