‘The Economist’

Malta Independent Monday, 15 October 2007, 00:00 Last update: about 14 years ago

Reading The Economist last week says it all where it comes to whether this country is on the right track or not.

An independent and credible publication, which clearly states that Malta should be considered as a model for larger scale economies, is surely to be noted. This country was without proper electricity and water production up to 20 years ago.

That was the point of departure for a government which had to create democracy, create business and build consumer confidence. Surely not an easy task for anyone.

The time has come to start sharpening what we’ve achieved so far. People do expect more and more. Like everywhere else in the world, we’re facing oil price hikes and agri-inflation.

We have to ensure that a Prime Minister with enough intelligence and know-how is guiding this country through the coming years. We might lose it all if we let certain petty issues change our views and elect a person who can hardly keep his team united.
