Special Olympics Malta has brought to Malta a total of 40 medals, including seven gold, following its participation in the 12th Special Olympics World Summer Games which were held in Shanghai between 2 and 11 October.
Special Olympics Malta, supported by Vodafone Malta Foundation, had a delegation of 19 athletes accompanied by six coaches, two heads of delegation, one assistance staff and a group of 24 parents, family and friends. The event brought together more than 7,000 athletes from nearly 170 nations, with the Maltese team participating in athletics, swimming, bowling and gymnastics.
“We are still over the moon with the results obtained. Our athletes gave their 100% in all competitions and they made us all proud. Malta was on everyone’s tongue and this made all the hard work of training worthwhile. The 2007 World Games provided a global stage to exhibit Special Olympics’ power to create harmony. We would like to thank the Vodafone Malta Foundation for their ongoing support and their assistance for these games and for all other Special Olympics Activities,” said Anna Calleja, Chairperson of Special Olympics Malta.
Special Olympics Malta gained 17 bronze medal, 16 silver and seven gold medals. Bowling produced five silver medals and two bronze; Athletics got one silver and 10 bronze medals; Swimming gained five bronze medals, five silver medals and three gold medals; gymnastics resulted in four gold medals and five silver medals. Gymnastics also gave two Maltese participants the gold medal in the All Around Female and Male categories.
