Twinning Project with Spain

Malta Independent Wednesday, 17 October 2007, 00:00 Last update: about 14 years ago

The Rural Affairs and the Environment Ministry is working with Spain’s Agriculture, Fisheries and Food Ministry on associations of producers in the fisheries sector, with the aim of setting up such associations here.

The plan is being financed by the European Union, was launched in January and should be concluded in July. Spanish experts are visiting Malta, for talks with officials from the Fisheries and Aquaculture Division, with members of the two fishermen’s cooperatives, and with the directors of fish farms, to explain how such associations operate, the advantages they bring, EU legislation regulating them, and aid available from the EU.

Before the plan is concluded, officials from the Fisheries and Aquaculture Division will be going to Spain, where they will visit the Agriculture, Fisheries and Food Ministry, and producer associations in Alicante, a town on Spain’s Mediterranean coast, known well for its fishing industry.
