The University Students Council’s secretary general yesterday told this newspaper that he believed the directive issued to students to simply park where they found space in view of the closure of the sports facility car park was a complete success.

The KSU told students to park wherever they could to demonstrate that they had had it up to the ears with the parking situation.

“Yesterday, the University Sports ground was closed till 11am. Thus, the KSU called for immediate action. All students were told to park in any parking space, be it on the blue, white or yellow lines. Any students facing any difficulties were to drop by the KSU office. Clamping of any cars would be reimbursed by KSU,” said KSU secretary general Bernard Galea yesterday.

Mr Galea said there were no instances of clamping or fines dished out yesterday. “Basically the point we are trying to make is that students will not take everything that is thrown at them. It is not fair and they also now know that they have the KSU behind them,” he said.

He said the KSU took some flak from students for waiting a whole week before taking action. “But the outcome was what we wanted in the end, we have got the students’ message across,” he said. Mr Galea said that a meeting was now in the offing with the University’s administration in a bid to solve the impasse.

Two onsite visits to the university did not reveal much out of the ordinary. TMID went onsite at 9am and again at 10.45am. On both occasions there were empty ‘white’ parking spaces on the ring road. Students are not normally allowed to park in those spaces, but they did yesterday. Despite this, although one could not say there were abundant spaces, there were still empty bays all round the university.
