Mtarfa-Zejtun C 0-2

Zejtun were undoubtedly the better side throughout the 90 minutes but it was Mtarfa who created the first opportunity through Johan Briffa whose shot was well saved by Fardell.

Gradually Zejtun pressed forward and deservedly broke the deadlock on 24 minutes with Glen Azzopardi Busuttil crossing for Andy Portelli to hit home from close range. Zejtun were again close through Brian Testaferrata and Steve Shead and five minutes before the break Andy Portelli appeared to have scored his second goal but the Zejtun striker was in an offside position and the goal was rightly disallowed.

After the change of ends Zejtun continued to dictate matters with Glen Azzopardi Busuttil and Andy Portelli hitting just wide. Mtarfa came back through two dangerous efforts by Johan Briffa with Zejtun replying through Jean Paul Abela and Glen Azzopardi Busuttil whose shots were saved by Muscat.

In the 82nd minute Zejtun closed the match as Andy Portelli’s corner-kick was headed in by Jesmar Abela.

Siggiewi-Qrendi 1-3

Qrendi had a positive first period with Josef Mansueto putting them in front after only five minutes. Siggiewi failed to make a reaction as Qrendi added a further goal through Joe Mercieca in the 17th minute.

Three minutes later Henry Jones converted a long-range free-kick as Vassallo was beaten for a third time with Siggiewi coming back on 28 minutes with Pierre Spiteri scoring from a well-taken free-kick. During the second part of the match Siggiewi dictated the run of play but they were rather sterile infront of goal with Qrendi managing to hold on to their two-goal lead.

Section B

Luqa SA-Gudja U 1-1

After just four minutes Gudja were denied by Luqa’a custodian John Agius off a Jesmond Micallef free-kick with Luqa’s response producing a Jason Camenzuli header and a shot by Adrian Psaila which went inches wide of the far post.

Luqa then squandered an easy opportunity through Randolph Penza who shot wide when all alone infront of goal but the same Luqa striker gave his team a deserved lead in the 28th minute with a low shot.

In the 37th minute Penza was once again in action as his effort was saved by Zammit and five minutes after the restart the Gudja keeper again did well to stop a Jason Cutajar free-kick. Gudja’s reaction produced attempts by Terence Vella and Malcolm Camilleri which were saved by John Agius but ten minutes from time substitute Edmond Thornton made it one-all with a fine shot.

Late in the match the Gudja goalkeeper brought off an excellent save to deny Jason Cutajar.

Kalkara-St Lucia 5-2

St Lucia took just two minutes to break the deadlock through a low shot by Liam Cutajar and then an attempt by Sean D’Amato was well saved by Barbara.

On another occasion D’Amato hit just high over the bar following a cross by Kurt Grima with Kalkara’s reply producing a shot by Mark Drago which was well saved by Zammit.

Seven minutes before the end of the first period Kalkara equalised through a shot by Shawn Vella from mid-pitch. Kalkara had an excellent second-half but it was Santa Lucia who took the lead in the 49th minute through Liam Cutajar.

Justin Camilleri equalised for Kalkara in the 63rd minute and three minutes later Kalkara took the lead through substitute Joe Mizzi.

The Saints failed to react as Kalkara made it 4-2 through Joe Mizzi’s second goal and late in the match they sealed the issue with a fifth goal scored by Kevin Tonna.
