Holy Matrimony?

Malta Independent Friday, 19 October 2007, 00:00 Last update: about 20 years ago

How grossly narrow-minded of Josie Muscat to continue thinking that all people have been called for holy matrimony!

Let us ask ourselves whether everyone is called for Holy Orders? Can just anyone enter a seminary or convent and become a priest or a monk?

In likewise fashion, not all people have been called for the sacrament of marriage – and this fact has been hidden so much from Western society at large that … we are now facing the problems that are so heavily present in our present families.

So, how ludicrous and conservative of Josie Muscat to attack the last budget simply because it “lacks incentives for the country to keep its traditional family model, thus prompting people to choose alternative lifestyles, such as staying single or cohabiting” (TMID, 16 October).

How terrifying for politicians or pseudo-politicians to preach about “traditional family models” when they should be fully aware that in today’s day and age, there is no such thing as a “model”.

So, go ahead, Dr Gonzi, revise your budget and put out a few carrots to single people so that they, too, will find themselves a partner and walk up the aisle in full fanfare – so that we can all say, in unison with Josie Muscat, that we are full of traditional families.
