Keeping Kercem Clean

Malta Independent Friday, 19 October 2007, 00:00 Last update: about 20 years ago

The local council at Kercem has carried out extensive work during the past year along the road leading to the picturesque beauty spot “Ghadira ta’ San Raflu”, limits of Kercem.

This is a place of outstanding natural beauty, visited daily not only by local residents on their daily walks and the local farmers, but also by numerous tourists, Maltese week-enders and school children on nature trips.

The local council has always striven to maintain the road leading to this beauty spot, with patching of the roads (a full-time job as the road also leads to several stone quarries, and so it is used by heavy lorries) and recently with the building of rubble walls along the whole two-kilometre stretch of road.

However I feel that the public in general is not doing its part in keeping the area clean and tidy. Despite a daily refuse collection service, bags of household refuse are dumped on the roadside beside the bring -in-site recycle bins.

I appeal to the general public, especially Kercem residents, to support the initiatives of the local council to keep this picturesque part of Gozo in pristine condition.
