When it returned on the airwaves after the summer hiatus Showtime had also brought about a few changes. Firstly, it moved from its Saturday night perch to Friday nights and it is now being broadcast on One TV. Chief among these changes is ANGELE GALEA who is presenting Showtime along with the inimitable Manuel. Gallarija took this opportunity to meet up with Angèle and find out more about this enigmatic new face.
The first thing we discovered was that Angèle's face wasn't really new at all. In fact, she's been in the scene for quite a few years and in a number of different places. The TV shows she has presented include Bottegin and Kerser Quiz which had won the BA Award for Best Children's Programme in 2002. As an actress, Angèle has also had main roles in dramas for which she was nominated for Best Lead Actress in a Comedy in 2006.
Theatre-goers may also be familiar with Angèle's acting talents on the stage, having played lead roles in such productions as South Pacific, Who's Afraid of Virginia Woolf? among others. Apart from that, Angèle is also an accomplished painter and pianist, having recently achieved her FLSM.
How do you feel to be helming such an established programme as Showtime?
I’m truly flattered. It’s quite an honour. It is a lovely challenge and I’m really enjoying the exhilarating experience.
Manuel Xuereb has become synonymous with Showtime. Had you met him before? And what has it been like working with him so far?
I had never met Manuel before so the first time I saw him at the office I was quite star-struck and wasn’t sure how to address him. But he is so warm and kind-hearted that we hit it off instantly and now it feels like I’ve known him for years. We complement each other very well.
Apart from a presenter, you're also a talented actress, pianist, and artist. Will you be involving any of these other skills in Showtime?
I’m definitely going to be accompanying Manuel singing on the piano every now and again. I would also love to do some acting because it’s something I love doing and maybe I could do some paintings during the Christmas season and we could auction the paintings on the show for one of our favourite charities.
As the new presenter of Showtime, you'll be stepping into the shoes of previous presenter Moira Delia. How do you feel about that?
Those are very big shoes to fill! I have always admired Moira both as a presenter and as a person. I am definitely aware that Showtime owes much to her appealing personality and I am hoping that I’ll provide the programme with some of my own character – albeit that of a brunette.
What can we expect from the new season of Showtime?
Showtime is a very fast show – very entertaining and colourful. This new season is proving to be just as energetic, fun and engaging and I’m enjoying prancing around in high heels and beautiful dresses, and meeting all those talented artists that one expects to see on Showtime. We’ve also got many exciting new characters and contests on the show that will definitely put a smile on people’s faces. I’m sure that would give our lovely audience another reason to love the fact that it’s Friday!
