The General Workers' Union, which is affiliated to the European Trade Union Council, is supporting ETUC-proposed changes to the European Works Council.
GWU general secretary Tony Zarb told a GWU international seminar that the ETUC wants a clearer definition of information and consultation within the EWC. They were insisting for a guarantee of the right that a trade union would be able to support worker representatives on the special negotiating bodies and on the EWC, Mr Zarb said.
He suggested that Maltese worker members of the Works Council should have a network here in which they could share experiences and the problems they came across in these councils. It would make them understand that many problems that they have with their managements exist also in other companies, which would help them face employer threats from a stronger position, Mr Zarb said.
