The Manoel Theatre Swings with GO concert will not just revive some immortal standard numbers made famous by big names such as Frank Sinatra, Dean Martin and Ella Fitzgerald. Under the musical direction of Sigmund Mifsud, the set-up of a 16-piece band, innovative music arrangements and singers, Nadine Axisa and Daniel Cauchi, the event promises swing numbers with a jazz flair.
Although the repertoire of the songs is that of standard numbers, the arrangements and interpretation given will be a contemporary sound that identifies the rhythm driven quality of swing music. Swing music varies a lot in tempo and one of its most important aspects is that it allows the musicians freedom to improvise. During the concert the musicians will be involved in some improvised solos giving the liberty for expression of spontaneous rhythms.
The main vocals for this concert are Daniel Cauchi, who is studying at the Conservatorio di Latina in Rome, and Nadine Axisa, an established singer.
Additionally, two guest artistes will join in the programme. Young talented singer Raquela Dalli Gonzi will be giving an interpretation of the song Summertime by George Gershwin and musician Godfrey Mifsud will be performing the clarinet concerto by Artie Shaw.
This concert will bring swing music presented in a different way that will surely attract a whole new audience.
The event is a production of the Manoel Theatre, directed by Sigmund Mifsud, sponsored by GO, the National Lotteries Good Causes Fund and HSBC, and supported by Tune In, Bortex and Le Meridien St Julian’s. Manoel Theatre Swings with GO will be held on 26, 27, and 28 October, shows beginning at 8pm.
