In an effort to raise the standard of local middle and distance running, the MAAA (in conjunction with St Patrick’s AC) is organising a seminar on ‘Better Coaching Practice to raise the standards of Maltese Middle and Long Distance Running’. It started yesterday and will come to an end tomorrow.
The seminar is being conducted by Mr Peter Thompson who occupies the post of Education Senior Manager within the IAAF. Mr Thompson is also an experienced lecturer and coach in the field of middle and long distance running and is considered to be a world authority on the subject.
During his stay in Malta, Mr Thompson is giving talks about ‘Lactate Dynamics Training and the New Interval Training’ and ‘What is Athlete Development and how can it be used?’
Whilst in Malta, it is the intention of Mr Thompson to concentrate as much time as possible on the practical aspect of coaching of young athletes including young senior athletes. For this reason, he will include a number of practical coaching sessions and will give Maltese coaches the opportunity of ‘learning by doing’ and observing.
The seminar is intended primarily for practising coaches but it is also open to senior athletes who are thinking of going into coaching or have an interest in the coaching aspect of athletics.
