60-second Interview: Sean Buhagiar

Sean is 21 years old and graduated B. Comm in Theatre Studies. He is now reading a Masters in the Science of Performative Creativity. On campus, in 2005, Sean was nominated Activity Officer for the Maltese Christian Democrats (SDM). During this year he was elected in the KSU (Kunsill Studenti Universitarji) as Culture and Entertainment coordinator. Also in 2007 he was Production manager and main designer of Scream, the Official Communications magazine.

Sean graduated from the Senior Drama Course at the Malta Drama Centre. He worked with leading figures such as Albert Marshall, Lino Farrugia, Irene Christ and Ruben Zahra, among others. He was also part of the Maltese Troupe for an international theatre project presented at the Monastir Theatre Festival for actors in Tunisia in August 2005. He was appointed assistant director in the production of In-Nisa Fenici, a Greek tragedy performed in August 2005, working with Mario Micallef, Carmen Azzopardi and other locally prominent actors. He was chosen through audition to perform with another two Maltese students in a project with a professional Irish theatre company, Theatre Lumière, performing a theatre piece directed by an Irish director, touring several venues in Ireland including the Cork Festival, and the world-renowned Dublin fringe festival in September/October 2005. Sean was chosen by Prof. Peter Serracino Inglott to produce and direct A Mediterranean Clutter for the KKU. Sean took part in the play The BFG by Teatru Qroqq, in Sfida in 2006/2007 as an actor coached by Alan Montanaro, Adrian Buckle and also Denise Mulholland, participated in practical workshops with Dr Frank Camilleri and Dr John Schranz and also performed as Joey in Sulari Fuq Strada Stretta directed by Mario Philip Azzopardi in January 2007.

How old are you? Star sign and date of birth?

I’m 18 till I die, but 21 years old for your Gregorian calendar. I was born on 23 June 1986 which puts me under the division of the best kissers of the Zodiac – Cancer, it is my only belief in astrology.

What would you like to be doing in 10 years’ time?

Smiling.

What is your idea of perfect happiness?

The smile of a woman after she went through hell to give birth to her baby

What is your favourite occupation?

In my life I wanted to become everything. Hence my love for the actor, although one would be blessed if he can call it an occupation. Acting apart, I think being a strawberry picker is cool.

Significant other?

Jesus Christ.

What is your greatest fear?

I had this dream where McDonald’s went bankrupt – nightmare.

What is it that you most value in your friends?

The fact that if you’re drunk they go mad to find a camera.

How would you like to die?

Killed in the shower, I always loved Hitchcock.

What is your greatest

extravagance?

Panem et Circenses.

What is your greatest regret?

I don’t believe in regrets. I call them lessons.

What is your most treasured possession?

Photos and videos of any part of my life

Which talent would you most like to have apart from the ones you already have?

I was a firm believer that motivation can equal talent. I’ve been trying to paint and sing for a good five years. I am now a firm believer that talent is innate.

What do you regard as the lowest depth of misery?

What is your most marked characteristic?

Humour I guess.

Who are your heroes/heroines in real life?

Tom and Jerry.

What is it that you most dislike?

The fact that life is beautiful but the world is hell.

What is your motto?

I usually switch between two which are related after all: “Live each day as if it were your last, but dream each day as if you’ll live forever” and as Robin Williams in Dead Poets Society fashionably stated: “Carpe Diem – Seize the day boys. Make your lives extraordinary.”
