The GWU’s Metal and Construction Section yesterday denied it had any hidden agenda about the government’s plans for the development of Grand Harbour. Replying to a statement by the Industry, Investments and IT Ministry, the section said it would be better to use dock two according to needs, both for yachts as well as for tankers.
As for dock 1, it said, the facts were that the government has, to date, not made any use of it since it assumed it, so the Malta Shipyards have lost any revenue they could have made through using it. The Tank Cleaning Farm at Ricasoli should not be moved, after all it was helping to protect the environment.
The section said the same could be said for Boiler Wharf and the other Marsa wharfs. It would be a financial disaster for the Shipyards if they were to lose the turnover from that wharf.
