Football – Bank Of Valletta Second Division: First victory for St Andrew’s

Rabat-St.Andrews 1-2

Rabat were the better team at first and in the ninth minute Darren Galea hit the upright with a low shot following a cross by Adam Smeir.

At the other end the Saints hit just wide through Patrick Briscoe White with Rabat replying through an Adam Smeir shot which went inches wide of the far post.

In the 23rd minute Rabat forged ahead through Clint Micallef whose volley finished at the back of the net.

The Saints’ reaction was immediate and after going close through Anthony Gera, they deservedly drew level on 28 minutes through Steve Falzon.

The Saints continued to push forward and they made it 2-1 on 33 minutes with Patrick Briscoe White heading in from a cross by Jeremy Gatt Coleiro.

Seven minutes into the second half the Saints were denied by James Borg off a Michael Valenzia free-kick with Rabat replying through two dangerous attempts by Alan Zahra and Clint Micallef.

On another occasion a shot by Darren Galea was saved by Tabone with the Saints coming back through Jeremy Gatt Coleiro and Andrew Tabone who hit just wide.

In added time Rabat were very close to an equaliser through Joe Caruana whose point-blank shot was blocked on the goal line.

St.Venera L.-Zurrieq 1-1

In the opening six minutes Zurrieq created dangerous goal scoring opportunities through Joe Lia and Matthew Genuis.

On another occasion Daniel Zammit headed at goal but Elvin Attard was on hand to save and at the other end the Lightnings missed a clear opportunity through Ian Falzon. Zurrieq responded through Michael Abdilla whose cross was saved by Attard and just before the break the St.Venera custodian again did well to stop an attempt by Joe Lia.

St.Venera played the better football during the second period and went close through Ian Falzon and Alfred Micallef.

On another occasion St.Venera gained a free-kick which was taken by Johan Scicluna with the Lightnings’ keeper losing the ball and Michael Abdilla took advantage as he shot in from close-range.

In the 82nd minute St.Venera managed to equalise through Daniel Piccinino with Azzopardi failing to hold on to the ball.
