Wrong Assertions

Malta Independent Wednesday, 31 October 2007, 00:00 Last update: about 20 years ago

With reference to the letter Wrong facts (TMID, 29 October), I must really say well done to Dr Simon Busuttil and Mr David Casa for having managed to get their press release on Romano Prodi’s alleged complaining about Malta’s sixth seat reported on BBC.

But please, stop treating people as fools. The BBC did not report Mr Prodi as saying that he was against Malta’s sixth seat. Only the Berlusconi owned Il Giornale came out with that assertion, and the BBC then quoted Dr Busuttil and Mr Casa’s reaction to the Il Giornale article.

It is a pity for them that theirs was not a prophetic press release... so much so that, despite our two MEPs’ cry of alarm, it then turned out that Mr Prodi had not said anything of the sort, and indeed Malta did get its rightful sixth seat in the European Parliament at the EU summit in Lisbon.

What a pity that they were the only two MEPs in the EP (out of 780) to swallow the false news bait fabricated by the Silvio Berlusconi employed journalist at Il Giornale.
