Steve Camilleri of Neptunes Vodafone and Malta ghas been named as the Waterpolo Player of the Year by the ASA.

He was well ahead of team-mate Niki Lanzon who finished second and Keith Schembri. Camilleri obtained 63 points, Lanzon got seven and Schembri 16.

Darren Ciappara was named as the Second Division Player of the Year. He obtained 27 votes, six more than second placed Timothy Sullivan and seven ahead of Dorian Pisani who obtained 20.

V. Vujasinovic of Neptunes Vodafone was named as best foreigner with 13 votes. Second placed, with 11 votes was M. Tamaz, while third was Marco Cuk.

In early October, Stevie Camilleri started a six-month loan period with Serbian giants VK Partizan, six-times European water polo champions. He has been training strenuously twice daily under the watchful eyes of Partizan’s coaches, and, though, still needing to improve his fitness levels, made he has made his debut in the Serbian League three weeks ago in a game against ZAK won by Partizan 25-3 where he also scored two goals.

Partizan, who actually have two teams taking part in the Serbian league, then played a much more balanced game against NIS, winning 12-8, with Camilleri again scoring another two goals, and giving a very good account of himself.

Partizan will be in action in the Serbian league again this weekend, and on Sunday will be waiting to find out their opponents in the Euroleague draws being held in Budapest.

Update on doping tests

The Association has carried out a total of 14 doping tests throughout the Wilkinson Sword national Water Polo championships. All doping tests carried out have proved to be negative.

The association thanked the Kunsill Malti ghall-Isport who have contributed towards the expenses of carrying out these tests abroad and also the carriers TNT, represented locally by C&C Express Ltd., who offered to deliver all the packages free of charge.
