Reference is being made to the article subtitled Letter of complaint sent to EC over SmartCity and titled prominently in bold lettering Issue raised by three local ISPs that ‘host MLP, GWU websites’ penned by Michael Carabott (TMID, 2 November).

Clearly, the article in question shows the agenda of your paper, that of taking every opportunity, even the most absurd, to intentionally put the GWU in bad light by trying to link it to the claim submitted to the European Commission by three Internet Service Providers against Maltacom’s dominant position in the market.

The GWU categorically declares that it has nothing to do with the said ISPs, except that the GWU’s l-orizzont simply happens to be a client of one of the mentioned ISPs as are thousands of others. Therefore, the link between l-orizzont and the ISPs claim before the European Commission is non-existent.

Without going into the merits of the claim in which the GWU has no interest, it is however evident that the newspaper’s intention was to falsely impress on your readers that the GWU is against the realisation of SmartCity project.

By his miserable effort, Mr Carabott, being a member of your newsroom, did nothing more than to expose your paper as one treading as far as possible to criticise the GWU.

Contrary to the impression that was given to your readers by Mr Carabott’s article, the GWU has already declared its unequivocal position in favour of employment generating projects, including SmartCity.

Editorial note: The front page report referred to by the GWU was quoting Investments, Industry and IT Minister Austin Gatt as having told Parliament that the complainants to the EC were three Maltese companies which host the mlp.org.mt website, the online version of the Kulhadd newspaper, the Malta Labour Party youth.org website and www.orizzont.com.mt. The Malta Independent was reporting what had been publicly stated by a minister in Parliament. That is why the headline specifically included the words ‘host MLP, GWU websites’ in between quotes.
