Malta Independent Thursday, 8 November 2007, 00:00 Last update: about 14 years ago

Down Syndrome Awareness Week 2007 is being celebrated by the Parent and Child Educational Services (PACES) within the Eden Foundation, until 10 November. During this week of events, awareness on Down Syndrome will be heightened and the extraordinary abilities and skills of persons with Down Syndrome will be brought to the open to educate the public.

Activities during the week include a visit to the Archbishop of Malta, a Family Day of fun and a football tournament at De La Salle College, as well as a bingo morning at the Carmelite Hall in Birkirkara.

Another highlight during the week will include a conference on Saturday when diverse speakers will address multi-sensory issues, behaviour management strategies, communication and building friendships with peers. During this conference, Romey Tacon, one of the designers of the Numicon Math System, will be addressing parents and professionals about Numicon. She will also be addressing this topic tomorrow in Gozo.

Numicon is a multi-sensory approach to teaching mathematics. This resource is being used in schools in the UK and other countries. During this past year, PACES at the Eden Foundation Malta, has introduced its clients to this maths system and is working in close collaboration with Ms Tacon on the technique.
