Expansion Works at MIA

Malta Independent Saturday, 10 November 2007, 00:00 Last update: about 20 years ago

The Malta International Airport has commenced expansion works which will extend the Departures Areas in order to improve services and facilities at the air terminal.

These expansion works are primarily intended to upgrade the security facilities in the Departure Area. In view of the projected increase in passenger movements in the coming years, the existing security checkpoint will be moved to a new area being built over the central courtyard and this will be upgraded by increased security lines. The space created within the existing area will expedite passenger flows.

The extension will also incorporate new commercial outlets at ground floor level and a new, more spacious VIP Lounge as well as additional retail space on the first floor, which will be accessible from airside. The projected increase in retail activity at MIA is directed towards an increase in non-aviation revenue which is nowadays vital for the running of an airport.

Works are expected to be completed by summer. During the construction process the existing passageway connecting the departures and arrivals area will be temporarily closed but alternative, safe passageways are being created for the convenience of airport users. The passageway at ground level to access the offices at second floor and the restaurant and viewing gallery at third floor level will also be temporarily closed but these areas will still remain accessible from Level -1.

Malta International Airport extends its apologies for any inconvenience these works may cause to its clients and reiterates that the project is being undertaken for the benefit of all airport users.
