There were mixed fortunes yesterday for Maltese players Simon Zammit and Alex Borg, both taking part in the World Amateur Championships being held in Thailand.
After their defeats on Tuesday, Simon Zammit returned to victory whilst Alex Borg suffered his third consecutive defeat.
Simon Zammit was in good form yesterday easily disposing of Wasfi Al-Shaka of Jordan, beating him 4-1.
Still smarting from the crushing defeat against Joe Meara Zammit is now in third place in Group C, with a good chance of making it to the second phase.
On the contrary Alex Borg’s position in Group D is becoming more and more complicated. He is currently in sixth place, but still has a chance to make it to the second round.
His slim chances depend on his performance today against Marcin Nitschke from Poland.
After the two defeats suffered on Tuesday against dene O’Kane and Mohamed Al Joker in yesterday’s match Alex Borg was beaten by Pramual Jantad from Thailand who took full advantage of the home environment.
Simon Zammit will also be in action today when he faces Do HoonKim from Korea. Another positive result for Simon Zammit will boost his chances even further for a qualifying berth.
