Charles Aquilina (photo) won the Valletta Cup for the first time in his career beating Mark Gauci 2-1 after sudden death.
The match was a very balanced encounter with Gauci taking the lead midway in the first half. Aquilina increased his attacking pressure in the second half and with three minutes to go he penetrated Gauci’s defence to equalise. The game went into extra time and barely one minute had gone when Aquilina scored the all-important goal which earned him the Valletta Cup trophy.
In the semi-final Aquilina surpassed last year holder Joe Borg Bonaci 1-0 with an extra time goal while finalist Mark Gauci gained a 3-1 win against Derek Conti.
The committee of the Valletta Subbuteo Club thanked the President of the Maltese-Chinese Society, Reno Calleja, and his committee for making available their premises in St Christopher Street where this year matches will be played.
