Some people think a lot and speak a lot but back down at the time of doing. They appear on television dressed in impeccable clothes talking about some worthwhile action they are on the verge of setting in motion but as day and weeks go by, their plans fade into nothingness although the publicity they gained while talking about “doing good” helps them in their career, the sometimes foolish public not even realizing that what was proposed never materialised.

There are others though who do not mouth great words, they do not show off trying to conquest grandeur but the deeds they perform should be a lesson to us all. One such person is prison director Sandro Gatt.

Having met the man personally, I can honestly state that it is practically impossible for any prisoner to be ill-treated under the humane supervision of the prison director. So great is the humility of the man who runs the Correctional Facility at Kordin that there were no words nor whispers of how the prison director opened a “prison block” dividing drug addicts from other prisoners who did not abuse drugs.

This tremendous progress in prison was not noted by the press. Mr Gatt did not don his best outfit and hold a press conference so that the public would be agog with the news and probably spend a whole week praising the efforts of the prison director.

How precious power is when one uses it for benefit of others! Such an achievement, a healthy one at that and the prison director never thought of blowing his own trumpet.

What a lesson to be learnt by all those pompous conceited arrogant speakers. May all the prisons in the world boast of a righteous director the likes of Mr Gatt.
