Qormi went into second place beating Marsa with the odd goal in seven in a spectacular and entertaining match. Qormi looked set for an easy victory against a Marsa side that was still smarting from two consecutive defeats in the League and a seven goal drubbing in the Trophy.

But the yellows in a commanding 4-1 lead till the 47th minute let their opponents come back into the game, and the Redblues could have even snatched a point with some luck.

Qormi made their intentions clear from the start and were one up in the sixth minute when Lee Grima passed to Carmel Formosa who beat Brincat with a grounder. Carmel Formosa went close again minutes later when Formosa’s shot was blocked by Brincat.

Marsa came to life on 15 minutes with a Jeremy Dalli shot, and a dangerous Kevin Xerri freekick that was well saved by Matthew Farrugia.

On 22 minutes Qormi were unlucky not to double the score when a Lee Grima shot hit the post and from the rebound Formosa missed an easy chance. On 29 minutes Marsa obtained the equaliser when Kevin Xerri’s freekick, this time found the top corner of the net. Four minutes later Qormi were back in the lead when Marsa goalkeeper Brincat punched into his own net a harmless looking corner by Camoin. Just before the break Qormi extended their lead when Carmel Formosa went past a defender before beating Brincat for his second personal goal.

At the start of the second half the match looked dead and buried when Lee Grima made full use of yet another Marsa defensive blunder to score with a low shot.

But the match was far from over as Marsa, scored two quick goals in the space of six minutes. On 49 minutes Kevin Xerri passed to Warren Chircop who scored with a well angled shot. On 55 minutes Xerri was floored by Zuccaro and from the resultant penalty Darren Vella made no mistake. Marsa went even close to the equaliser but Shaun Cutajar’s cross shot hit the crossbar. On their part Qormi should have wrapped the game in the final stages but the Marsa goalkeeper made amends with some brilliant saves that kept his side in the game till the last second.
