Merit Where due

Malta Independent Tuesday, 27 November 2007, 00:00 Last update: about 20 years ago

Sorry, John Saliba, (Merit where due, TMID, 13 November), I am not going to take up your challenge as when I wrote my letter I had no intention of getting involved in party politics.

I just wanted to point out a historical fact – that it was due to the pressure of Maltese political groups and parties, other associations and groups and individuals that the British government made various concessions when granting Constitutions (1849 to 1964) to Malta.

Not recognising this would be twisting history and would be a great disservice to all those who in one way or other sought to achieve the best for our Islands.

Secondly, although I know a thing or two about Constitutional history, I do not think that history should be discussed in a situation where more importance is given to interpretation rather than facts and where the main aim is gaining political mileage.
