A company yesterday filed for a retrial over a case relating to the validation of US dollar banknotes.

La Piazza Ltd filed for retrial in the case that had been instituted against the company by Bank of Valletta over the validation and deposit of $40,200. It turned out that the company had attempted to get the notes validated and deposited, which the bank complied with. However, the bank later turned round and said the notes were not valid and opened a court case against La Piazza Ltd.

The court found in favour of the defendants (La Piazza) and the case was subsequently put to appeal. This time, the court ruled in favour of BOV.

The complainants (La Piazza) felt that the Appeals Court interpreted the law wrongly and made a request for retrial.
