Volleyball: Paola Hibs Candy Go top

Last weekend a number of matches from the ladies volleyball league were played at the Cottonera Sports Complex.

These games brought to an end the first round of the national league with a further two rounds remaining. Paola Hibs Candy met Playvolley Blue in an encounter that gave the Paolites the full three points.

Both teams started off with the same pace giving supporters a balanced encounter until the first 18 points, with each team doing their utmost to gain the lead.

Hibs were the more experienced team and this paid off towards the end of the first set with Caroline Sciberras and Alison Borg Hayman scoring the necessary points to close the set.

During the second and third sets, Hibs played better volleyball and were totally superior especially with a number of excellent services by Gertrude Zarb.

Playvolley were never close in threatening the Paolites. Hibs won the remaining sets 25-12 and 25-13 and the match 3-0. This win takes Paola Hibs Candy to the top of the league standings with a clean sheet of 4 wins and 12 points. X-Sel follow behind with 3 wins and 10 points.

The second match played on Sunday was between Flyers and Playvolley Red. Flyers were the stronger team on paper boasting players such as Lindsey Cordina and Louise Spiteri who, on the day were in top form. Flyers coach Steve Farrugia opted to play Daniela Muscat as libero.

The game was totally one sided with Flyers winning comfortably all sets leading to a final result of 3-0.
