Your editorial Regenerating the Grand Harbour, (TMID 26 November) suggested that the Opera House site should be turned into a War Museum. I totally disagree! Have we not got one already? And have we not got enough museums?

The Opera house should be rebuilt in all its glory exactly as it was.

All European cities, where we also stand, have a real historic opera house to be proud of and to keep the past alive. Warsaw was completely flattened during the last war. It has been completely rebuilt, meticulously, as it was. And what a restoration.

I am sure that there exist some contingencies in European Union funds for this. With an injection of some extra cash from Germany and the UK (and the reasons are obvious!), we could again have our majestic Opera House to greet one and all at the entrance of our magnificent City. What a tourist attraction! And not costing us a penny – sorry, a euro cent!

While we’re at it, why don’t we also rebuild the City Gate, again exactly as it was? What a shock I got when I was informed that the historic architecture that once stood there adorning the City entrance, was used as rubble for the Floriana arena. What a scandalous shame!

The stones for both these edifices could be aged and made to look not so new, until the forces of nature do the job properly.

You ended by asking the political parties to share their ideas. I too would like to share my ideas. But would anybody listen?
