Section ‘A’

Zebbug R-Qrendi 3-0

Qrendi had a strong start with Zebbug having to defend for long stretches. After 11 minutes Qrendi went close through Josef Mansueto whose drive from the edge of the penalty area just missed the target. Then a long-range shot by Martin Briffa was well saved by Martin Pace.

In the 45th minute the Qrendi keeper Roderick Mascena brought off a fine save to deny Gordon Mallia and the loose ball was picked up by George Saliba who crossed from the right flank for Lawrence Vella to hit home. Zebbug gained the initiative after the break and in the 52nd minute a Qrendi defender cleared the ball off the goal line to stop a shot by Julian Camilleri. Two minutes later Zebbug hit the post through Errol Cachia but from the rebound Nazzareno Abela hit home to make it 2-0. Zebbug sustained the pressure and they added a third goal in injury-time through Lawrence Vella.

Section ‘’B’

Kirkop-Luqa SA 0-1

Luqa came out strongly and after just three minutes Clive Psaila hit just wide from a free-kick. They were again close through Oliver Cutajar and Randolph Penza and on 37 minutes Adrian Psaila’s rising shot was well saved by the Kirkop custodian Stephen Mizzi.

Seven minutes later Oswald Zammit was close for Kirkop with Luqa responding through attempts by Jason Cutajar and Alessandro Pirrone which went just wide.

Kirkop created a couple of opportunities but it Luqa who broke the deadlock on 76 minutes as they were given a penalty for a foul on Randolph Penza and the same player duly converted from the spot.

Kirkop’s late reaction was well controlled by Luqa who managed to hold on to their slender lead.

Kalkara-Gharghur 0-5

Kalkara were no match for Gharghur as the latter dominated the proceedings for long stretches taking the lead on 11 minutes through Christian Glass from the penalty spot, a penalty given for a handling infringement by Shawn Vella.

Karl Vella Petroni finished off a good move in the 19th minute to make it 2-0 and on the half-hour a shot by Marvic Grech bounced off the crossbar. Two minutes later Kalkara’s defender Shawn Vella headed the ball into his own net for Gharghur’s third goal and just before the break Marvic Grech missed a sitter.

Two minutes after the restart Gharghur increased further their lead with Matthew Coleiro’s free-kick being headed in by Robert Southward.

And it was 5-0 on 65 minutes as Clayton Cachia’s cross from the right flank was headed in past Barbara by substitute Jeffrey Bonello.

Gharghur created other opportunities which were however controlled by the Kalkara defence.
