Over 700 students will have graduated from MCAST by today at the graduation ceremonies held at the Dolmen Resort Hotel.
Yesterday saw students graduating from the following Institutes:
Institute of Business and Commerce, Institute of Art and Design, Institute of Agribusiness, and Institute of Mechanical Engineering.
Today students will graduate from the following Institutes:
Institute of Information and Communication Technology, Institute of Building and Construction Engineering, Institute of Community Services, and Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineering.
This year there are three new courses – MCAST-BTEC National Diploma in Aerospace Engineering, Diploma in Construction Management and the MCAST-BTEC National Diploma in Applied Science.
Paul A Attard, president of the board of governors, referred in an address to the signing of a collaborative agreement with the Malta Federation of Industry. Both organisations pledged to provide a structured framework that would provide MCAST students with the opportunity to better access the world of work through FOI membership, as well as to deliver vocational education and training programmes/services for the diverse client groups.
Among the other objectives of this agreement, the two bodies agreed to develop initiatives relating to the provision of industry-demanded programmes and courses; the delivery of talks; participation in international and European Union projects; as well as the exchange and dissemination of labour market intelligence and good practice for benchmarking and comparative studies.
The College is in the process of working on implementing the master plan that the government presented this year. All MCAST Institutes, which are spread across the island, will be moved to the main campus in the coming years.
The new site will cover both the area where MCAST now stands as well as Gaddafi Gardens and a stretch of land that leads to the Grand Harbour.
The master plan provides an opportunity to bring together the nine MCAST Institutes on one site and provide for the projected growth of vocational education in Malta. New improved services, spaces and facilities will play a significant part in attracting students and staff to the college. The design-approach places the user at the heart of the process with the buildings and spaces shaped around the functional activities and a strong social idea.
The full master plan provides 59,915 square metres of learning space; flexible teaching spaces, workshops, laboratories, student facilities, administration and indoor sports plus outdoor sports, public amenity spaces, 1,150 car parking spaces and servicing on one campus.
Frank Edwards, MCAST Principal/CEO, said that “At MCAST we have rightly put students at the heart of all that we do”. He mentioned how employers talk about MCAST students positively and with admiration, not just about the skills and knowledge acquired but also about their attitude to work.
