University Offers experiences which make students mature

Malta Independent Thursday, 6 December 2007, 00:00 Last update: about 13 years ago

Graduate Raycine Portelli said in her speech yesterday that in the last three years, she and her fellow students went through a number of experiences in which they matured, three years in which they laughed and cried together.

On their first day at University, she said, all students were shy as they still had to settle in the university system; however, they all worked together and were now receiving the degree they had striven for.

Together with her fellow students, she said she learnt a lot of skills spanning diverse subjects. The class was also the last one taking final exams on the second and third years, meaning that they had to sit for exams relating to almost 15 high-level topics. That tough experience, said the speaker, made her and her fellow students able to handle pressure.

She praised the careers convention organised yearly by the University Students Council (KSU) which brings together highly reputable firms that recruit students. This meant that university did not only take care of its students’ education, but to a certain extent protects their future.

Ms Portelli also praised student’s organisations that work towards improving the students’ life at university and promoting teamwork.

On a more personal note she recalled her experience as a sales representative during the last two years of her course, when she juggled between her job and her studies. She said work was the best way in which she put into practice what she was learning in her Accounts and Economics course and that it helped her build a strong character.

Chris Grech recalled the days when together with his colleagues he used to rush from one lecture room to another in order to find a place in the overcrowded rooms during his first year at university. He also recalled the times when they had to sit on the floor and chatted away rather than paid attention to the lecturer. The days students spent in the sun at the quadrangle and those discussing group assignments were over, he said as almost each student entered the world of employment.

Looking back to the five years he spent at university, Mr Grech, said the level of education was excellent, however he criticised the lack of practical work which always came second far behind theory.

He also appealed to all those that formulate exam questions to test the students’ intellect rather than their ability using a calculator or reproduce by memory answers learnt by working past papers.
