300-year-old Sanctuary being restored

Malta Independent Saturday, 8 December 2007, 00:00 Last update: about 20 years ago

Infrastructure Minister Ninu Zammit yesterday went to Qormi to view works on the last phase of the restoration of the Sanctuary of the Madonna tal-Hlas, which is surrounded by fields. It is built on the site of a large chapel which had been built around 1495.

The sanctuary was built over 300 years ago and had suffered damage both from weeds growing on its walls, and from nails hammered into the walls. Various other works need to be carried out, such as plastering and replacing worn out stone on two rooms next to it. The work is being carried out by employees of the ministry’s restoration section and would cost over Lm16,600.
