Back in May 2007 Godwin Debattista, Managing Director Batista Leisure Group got a phone call on from a young man who wanted help launching his music career. On meeting Jay Omaro in his office, it was clear that this was no ordinary guy at all. While chatting about music, songwriting, concerts, productions and education Jay invited him to his place of work; a recording studio that was more like his haven. What follows is an intriguing true story of a person whom Godwin describes as “an extremely talented super teen”.
The day Godwin entered the studio Jay Omaro sat down at a larger than life audio mixer. In front of him was a female singer. He said “Be with you in a minute, I just need to record a bit more of her voice”. Jay was, in fact, already in the business of producing another singer.
Then Godwin discovered that Jay Omaro was his stage name, (his real name is Matthew), that he trains vocally with a professional coach from Britain, that he writes his own songs, and plays the piano. He has had two songs on the top local radio charts and was also nominated for best newcomer at the Bay Music Awards 2006. Although Godwin has managed a lot of teenage artists, he was overwhelmed to meet such a highly talented individual. Jay Omaro was invited to join Batista Leisure Group’s list of artists. Throughout the last summer, Jay took part on every main stage in the Maltese islands. It was striking that wherever he went, he always demanded to sing live and managed to convince the sound engineers to accommodate his request, even though the sound system would have been geared for playback (miming) only. It was no surprise that he soon became a hit with his audiences. Recently he released his new single My World which was an instant hit. The local DJs and the public in general love it. He was recently nominated for both the Malta Music Awards for Best R&B artist and the Bay Music Awards for Best solo artist.
