Tatjana Chircop, who graduated BA Hons in youth and community studies yesterday, pointed out that during these last few years there has been a lot of progress when it comes to inclusion in education, “however when will we really be able to internalise and practise inclusion in every field?” she asks.
Ms Chircop was referring to the various forms of art that do not exist in Malta’s educational system throughout the years. “Although they exist at a university level, the foundations needed to be built from our early childhood are not there, and they are not offered as part of our curriculum. The arts still seem to be considered a luxury and the access to a cultural education depends on the parents’ income and background,” she said. “When it comes to disciplines such as music, dance and theatre those students who want to take up the arts as a career, find themselves looking for something in Malta which does not exist. What is needed is an educational structure in the primary and secondary schools that incorporates different forms of art in the curriculum.”
Veronica Bonello, who graduated in architecture, said that a practical aspect of their formation takes place in the civil engineering laboratory, therefore it was a pity that this laboratory was not always at the disposal of students. “Design is another important aspect in the courses of architecture and civil engineering, however due to a lack of space at the university faculty students from the fifth year of architecture and urban design have to find another place where to exhibit their final exams’ work. This means that the expenses for this activity are paid by the students themselves,” she said.
“Therefore we are hereby expressing our desire for financial as well as organisational assistance from the university for our fifth year exams,” added Ms Bonello. “The problem of lack of space is also felt by students from every year of the course when it comes to design tutorials, and whenever they need to show their work during a review. It is important that there should be enough space in the design studios for all students, as this kind of teamwork is essential for our profession.”
