Your editorial An error of judgment (TMID, 29 November) proved to be correct with regard to the title, but “an error of judgment” was committed only by yourself when you stated that Dr Alfred Sant should not refuse participation in whatever programmes he is invited to and that he would have been wrong not to go.

After having watched Xarabank, beyond a shadow of a doubt I think Dr Sant actually deserves a standing ovation for not attending especially after noting that the audience was packed with Nationalist supporters. We are on the eve of an election and you expected Dr Sant to be “fed to the lions”?

Let me show you a different picture: There is this referee who literally is filled with disgust towards one particular team who is going to play against his favourite team. Now tell me honestly and truly, who do you think the referee is going to favour?

It is true that Dr Sant participated in many editions of Xarabank but I do not think that it is the ideal place for a serious subject like politics to be debated.

As for the Labour leader attending to put forward his message, this is a downright joke right? I bet my favourite expensive sunglasses that the referee would have blown his whistle (in this case a commercial or a musical interruption) when Dr Sant felt it relevant to convey an important message to the public.

Dr Sant did not lose by not attending Xarabank. It was a “ride” he could do without.
