Dual Currency circulation period

Malta Independent Sunday, 9 December 2007, 00:00 Last update: about 13 years ago

HSBC Malta reminds its customers that the dual circulation period for the euro and Maltese currency starts on 1 January and ends on 31 January.

During this period, Maltese lira notes and coins will circulate alongside euro notes and coins. This period is necessary since sufficient time is needed to withdraw Maltese lira notes and coins from circulation.

Until 31 January, purchases can be made in both Maltese lira and euro, but change is given back in euro only. After 31 January, the Maltese lira can no longer be used for payment. Nevertheless, Maltese lira cash can still be exchanged free of charge at HSBC Bank branches and other commercial banks, between 1 January and 31 March, at the irrevocably fixed conversion rate.
