The Coppa Italia reserved for clubs took place the past weekend in Chainchaino Terme in Toscana. The top 16 Italian clubs took part in this prestigious competition, while the other teams compete in the Coppa Italia cadetti.

Massimo Cremona’s Perugia claimed the honours whereas in the final they beat newly crowned European champions Pisa 2-1. It was also Perugia’s fourth success in this competition – a record .

Seven other Maltese players were also in action for their respective clubs namely, Mark Gauci and Charles Aquilina with Reggiana, Joseph Mifsud and Jean Carl Tabone with Palermo, Derek Conti and Samuel Bartolo with CCT Roma and Josef Camilleri with Cosenza.

In the Group stages Perugia easily beat Firenze and Torino 4-0 before losing the final group game to Reggiana 1-2, a result that enabled both teams to qualify for the quarter finals, as previously Reggiana had lost to Torino 1-2 and beat Firenze 3-1.

Conti and Bartolo’s CCT Roma also made it through after they lost 0-4 to Bologna, they drew with Milano 2-2 and beating Biella 3-0.

Mifsud and Tabone’s Palermo failed to pass through the group stages as they lost 0-3 against Black Rose Roma and 1-3 against Napoli, while in the last match they beat Catania 2-0.

In the quarter final, Perugia beat Bari 2-1, CCT Roma lost to Black Rose Roma on a golden goal after a 2-2 draw and Reggiana were eliminated by Pisa 1-3

In the semi-final, Perugia beat Black Rose Roma 2-0 and in the final match they beat Pisa 2-1.

“After a rather disappointing performance in the Champions League in Athens, it was a wake up call for Perugia, where in the Coppa Italia the team showed anger, determination and most of all team spirit, which were all the keys to put our team where it belongs. With this attitude and winning mentality more success will come. Now our aim will be to win the Serie A League title,” Cremona said.
