During yesterday’s final graduation ceremony for this year, new graduand Veronique Abela (B.Ed. Honours) spoke about the issue of compulsory class attendance within the faculty of education: “Although I can understand that this is a form of discipline, I don’t understand why it is still being used with a group of adults who are responsible for their own education. If the lessons are interesting they will be well-attended and if attendance is poor this shows that the problem lies elsewhere, and we should not be penalised for it. Attendance is not taken in the major part of faculties, so surely this is a rule which can be revised, even within our faculty,” she said.

Ms Abela also mentioned that she felt very honoured and supported by her tutor’s impeccable assistance during her thesis’ preparation, however, not everybody had this privilege and many students struggled to find some time to spend together with their tutor. “This is why it is not fair for the students if the tutor accepts a big load of students, when he does not have enough time for all of them due to other obligations. It is better for him not to accept the students at all, rather than realizing, half way through the course, that he cannot keep his commitment to the students, as this creates a lot of uncertainties and extra stress for them,” explained Ms Abela.

She thanked her lecturers and colleagues for the important role they had “during this four year journey which passed like a dream!” And emphasised the importance of participating in organisations such as KSU, USTA and MKSU among others, because of the work they do for the social and academic aspects of university life. She thanked USTA especially for keeping them up-to-date with the changes made within the education sector. “It is natural that we make complaints and suggestions for change, however I also wish to show our appreciation for all the hard work, towards the faculty as a whole,” she concluded.
