Football – Bank Of Valletta third division: Gozo FC keep marching on with sixth successive win

Section A

Zejtun C. vs Siggiewi 1-0 Zejtun played the better football during the first-half and early on a Norbert Gerada crosshot was saved by Camilleri.

In the 25th minute Gerada wasted a clear goal scoring opportunity as he shot straight into Camilleri with the ball bouncing off the crossbar and eight minutes later the post again denied the Corinthians off a long-range shot by Andy Portelli.

Siggiewi gained the upper hand in the midfield sector after the change of ends and they were very close through efforts by John Mascena and David Calleja which were well saved by Fardell.

In the 75th minute and indecision between Siggiewi's keeper Tommy Camilleri and Mark Aquilina allow Zejtun’s striker to shoot home from close-range with Siggiewi’s response producing an Eman Ciappara free-kick with Fardell bringing off a fine save. In a counter-attack Zejtun were denied by Camilleri off an angled shot by Mario Farrugia.

Mdina K vs Ghaxaq 1-1

After two minutes Mdina went close through Adrian Farrugia whose shot was saved by Cemilleri with Ghaxaq protesting for a penalty for a handling infringement by an Mdina defender. Mdina broke the deadlock in the 15th minute through Nicky Micallef and later on a long-range shot by Ian Sammut went inches wide of the far post.

But in the 65th minute they gained a free-kick for a foul on Bjorn Dalli with Albert Caruana scoring with an angled shot. On another occasion a low shot by Dalli was saved by the Mdina keeper and three minutes from time they wasted a clear goal scoring opportunity through Cristiano.

Xghajra T vs Mtarfa 4-3 Xghajra gained the upper hand in the midfield sector and dictated the run of play for long stretches but it was Mtarfa who went close in the 15th minute through Peter Spiteri. At the other end Brian Magro hit just wide for Xghajra who however took the lead through Lizio Grech on the half-hour. Xghajra were then twice denied by Muscat off attempts by Neil Attard and Jesmond Azzopardi. Seven minutes into the second period Mtarfa scored their first goal this season through Richard Attard to make it 1-1 but on the hour Xghajra regained the lead through an own-goal by Mtarfa’s defender Peter Spiteri off a header by Alex Azzopardi.

Mtarfa came back with the equalising goal through Richard Attard in the 62nd minute and made it 3-2 in the 72nd minute through Clint Borg from the penalty spot after the same player had been fouled by Jovil Abela. Eight minutes from time Xghajra scored the equaliser through Alex Azzopardi and in the 95th minute they scored a dramatic winning goal through Jesmond Azzopardi. Referee Sammut had an excellent game in a very difficult match.

Section B

Gudja U vs Gzira U 0-2 Gudja had a clear goal scoring opportunity after just three minutes as Elvin Gauci’s point blank effort was saved by Keith Camilleri but from then onwards Gzira gained the initiative with the Gudja custodian Glenn Zammit bringing off a difficult save to deny Darren Caruana. On 21 minutes Gudja’s defender Clifford Mangion cleared off the line to stop a shot by Aldrin Muscat and later on a Neil Zarb Cousin free-kick was saved by Zammit. Gzira sustained the upper hand after the break and after going close through James Tabone and Aldrin Muscat, they took a deserved lead through substitute Owen Spiteri in the 74th minute. They made it 2-0 on 81 minutes through a close-range shot by Nico Corito following a good move by Spiteri and a minute from time Gudja were reduced to ten players when Elton Bugeja following a second booking.

St Lucia vs Pembroke 0-3

The Saints went close early on as a lob by Charles Agius was blocked on the goal line but it was Pembroke who opened the score in the 24th minute as Carlo Leonardi beat Carabott following a personal effort. Santa Lucia created a goal scoring opportunity through Joel Grima whose shot just missed the target and just before the break Pembroke responded through Carlo Leonardi’s header which was saved by Carabott. On the hour Karl Vella headed in from a Jeffrey Fenech corner-kick to make it 2-0 for Pembroke with the Saints hitting the post through Oliver Magri. A minute from time Pembroke sealed their win through substitute Liam Camilleri who finished off from a cross by Leonardi.

Kirkop U vs Gozo 2-3

Gozo managed to break the deadlock in the 22nd minute as a well-taken corner-kick taken by Chris Camilleri was headed in by John Camilleri. Seven minutes later Gozo missed an easy opportunity through Charles Mercieca following a Chris Camilleri free-kick and just before the end of the first period the Gozitan striker John Camilleri shot wide when all alone in front of Mizzi. Eight minutes into the second-half Kirkop made it one-all through Oswald Zammit but Gozo managed to respond with their second goal in the 71st minute through Anthony Portelli. Kirkop reacted and once again drew level in the 81st minute through a William Debattista header from a Brian Falzon corner-kick. A minute later Gozo scored the decisive goal through their best player Chris Camilleri.
