Last weekend, a number of volleyball matches were played from the senior male and female categories.
Marsascala Mapei faced Aloysians, X-Sel played against Playvolley Red and Flyers met Playvolley Blue. A number of under 15 matches and an under 18 match between Flyers and Paola Hibs Candy were played too.
The awaited match between Marsascala Mapei and Aloysians ended with Mapei taking all three points. Mapei started on the wrong foot as Aloysians won the first set 25-23 taking advantage over the over-confident Marsascala. However, the latter settled down and managed to win the three remaining sets 25-14, 25-18 and 25-17. Christian Pecorella and Alan Gauci played well for Aloysians with Robert Balzan, Owen Spiteri and Louis Schriha doing most of the damage for Mapei.
In the ladies category, X-Sel won against Playvolley Red with Thais Gatt in good shape for X-Sel. Playvolley Blue won against Flyers in a match that lasted over 2 hours. Playvolley started well easily winning the first set 25-17. Flyers fought back with a good performance from setter Claudette Mifsud and won the second and third set 25-23 and 25-21. With the set score in favour of Flyers, Alan Gauci’s team found the strength to level the sets won with powerful spikes by Nadia Lanzon, who on the day was Playvolley’s best player.
Playvolley won a close fourth set 25-23. The match ended with a fifth set thriller with both teams canceling each others efforts out. However, Playvolley Blue managed to come out as winners as these won the final set 18-16.
In the under 18 league, Flyers beat Paola Hibs Candy 2-0. Although Hibs played with more determination this time and were also in the lead during a number of occasions, they were unable to overcome a stronger Flyers coached by Carmel Borg. Flyers are now occupying first position in the under 18 ladies league.
