Marsa 3

Marsa stopped their negative trend yesterday when they surprisingly beat Mosta 3-0, thanks to a Warren Chircop brace and an injury time goal by Achukwu.

Marsa coming from three consecutive defeats, played their hearts out and never gave away an inch, against promotion aspirants Mosta who slumped to their second consecutive defeat.

Although Mosta did the early running, Marsa crawled slowly into the game taking the lead before half time. At the start of the second half, Marsa had a very good spell, doubling the score.

Mosta dominated the last part of the match but failed miserably in front of goal missing a couple of easy chances that could have well saved them the match.

But on the other hand Marsa fully deserved their victory as they made full use of Mosta’s shaky defence, a defence that is sorely missing Daniel Theuma and Charles Sciberras’ support in midfield.

Mosta did the early running with Ryan Deguara testing Marsa goalkeeper Spiteri from the edge of the area, with the same goalkeeper saving brilliantly a superb Ryan Deguara freekick.

Marsa started to come out of their defensive shell and even managed to take the lead on 37 minutes. Kevin Cassar crossed towards Warren Chircop who made full use of Mosta’s loose marking in defence to beat Debono for the opener.

Mosta introduced chief marksman Carlos Camenzuli in the second half, but Marsa dominated the early stages with Jean Paul Zammit testing Debono after a good solo effort.

On 50 minutes Achukwu beat Debono but Antonio Saliba managed to clear off the goal line. Three minutes later Achukwu passed to Chircop whose shot was well saved by Debono.

Mosta had their chance on 55 minutes with an Elton Vella freekick saved by Spiteri. But three minutes later Marsa doubled the score with an excellent move between Achukwu and Jeremy Dalli who passed to Warren Chircop who dribbled past the goalkeeper before scoring his sixth goal of the season.

Mosta dominated the last part of the match as they attacked heads down. On seventy minutes Melvin Farrugia passed to Elton Vella who beat the offside trap but shot incredibly wide all alone in front of goal. Five minutes later Mosta missed another glorious chance when defender Steve Borg failed to score with only goalkeeper Spiteri to beat.

In the dying minutes it was substitute Ginev’s turn to miss another sitter heading wide after a good cross from the left by Camenzuli.

In stoppage time Warren Chircop, Marsa’s best player yesterday, had a powerful run before passing to Achukwu who slotted home his first goal of the season.

Senglea A. 1

A Kenneth Abela strike in the second half was enough for Senglea to register their third win of the season and move further up in the table.

Senglea were the better team in the first half thanks to their superior quality in midfield. Cuschieri, Caruana and Tanti however failed to create scoring opportunities for their strikers Kenneth Abela and Anthony Ewurun.

The latter was the most dangerous player hitting over the bar in the opening stages and forcing Dingli goalkeeper Farrugia to a desperate save on 35 minutes.

Dingli's strikers Anywanna and Jeremy Agius never tested George Attard, despite Formosa and Spiteri's hard work in midfield.

The second half continued on the same pattern, but on 52 minutes Senglea took the lead when Kenneth Abela scored after receiving a long freekick from Kevin Mifsud, with the Dingli defence caught napping.

The game now sprang into life with Dingli trying their utmost to obtain the equaliser. Anywanna managed to score but the goal was disallowed for an offside infringement.

Dingli's pressure in attack left gaping holes in their defence and Ewurun showed all his speed and flair with numerous runs that left the Dingli defence reeling. On 70 minutes Dingli goalkeeper Farrugia made a brilliant save following a Mark Tanti freekick.

In the dying minutes Dingli dominated and could have snatched an equaliser with some luck.
