Section ‘A’

Qrendi-Zejtun C. 1-0

After ten minutes the Qrendi goalkeeper Roderick Mascena brought off a difficult save to foil Brian Grech and later on Norbert Gerada lobbed just over the bar from a cross by Brian Testaferrata.

Qrendi broke the deadlock through Saviour Sacco in the 23rd minute with Zejtun going very close through Andy Portelli and Mario Farrugia, the latter wasting an easy chance as he shot wide in front of an open goal.

In the 65th minute the Zejtun keeper brought off a difficult save to stop a shot by Josef Mansueto and minutes later Saviour Sacco hit just high over the bar following a solo effort.

Gradually Zejtun pushed forward and were close through Steve Shead. Qrendi ended the match with ten players with Martin Briffa being booked for a second time in the 78th minute and was sent off.

Section ‘B’

Luqa SA-Gharghur 1-2

At the start, Luqa St.Andrews went close through a Clive Psaila free-kick which was saved by Vella.

A minute later Vella was again on hand to block a shot by Mark Said and in the 10th minute the Gharghur keeper again did well to save a free-kick well-taken by Clive Psaila.

Gradually Gharghur shared the exchanges and created a goal scoring opportunity through Christian Glass with Luqa gaining a penalty for a handsball by Gharghur’s David Galea but Luqa’s striker Randolph Penza shot wide from the spot to waste a good opportunity.

Luqa were still good enough to take the lead in the 50th minute as Alessandro Pirrone headed home from lose-range but Gharghur made it one-all through Karl Vella Petroni following an indecision in the Luqa defence.

Play became quite rough and in the final minutes four players received a second yellow card: Daniel Borg, Karl Vella Petroni and Christian Glass (all Gharghur) and Luqa’s striker Randolph Penza. Gharghur grabbed the winning goal in added time through substitute Andre Azzopardi.
