In last weekend’s matches, Marsascala Mapei beat Marsascala 3-1, while in the ladies league, Paola Hibs Candy won against Flyers and Playvolley Blue beat Playvolley Reds 3-1.
In the men’s category, Marsascala started off well by winning the first set and this put Marsascala Mapei, who are now coached by ex national coach Mark Hili under some pressure.
However, Mapei reacted well and with good spikes by Robert Balzan and Karl Meilaq managed to level the set score. Ron Stivala was instrumental in attack with Vince Pace doing a good job in the libero position. Mapei played better and won the match 3-1.
In the ladies category, Playvolley Blue won all three points against their second team, Playvolley Reds. It was the Blues that took the first set with a good team performance.
However, the Reds played their hearts out in the second set and good efforts by Shana Bugeja and Melissa Borg helped give Kris Crocker’s team the equaliser. Playvolley Blues reacted well utilizing experienced players such as Nadia Lanzon and national team players Maria Demicoli and Dorianne Bonnici forcing the Reds to throw the towel and winning the match 3-1.
In the second ladies match, Paola Hibs Candy beat Flyers in a match that unlike other encounters, did not live up to the expectations as both teams performed below par.
Hibs fielded an experienced team with the likes of national players Carmen Gauci, Alison Borg Hayman, Tiziana Bonnici and Gertrude Zarb. On the day, Flyers were unable to keep up with too few successful attacks.
It was Lindsay Cordina who caused most damage and who was Flyers’ best player on Sunday. Hibs won the match 3-0.
