League leaders Qormi were held to a goalless draw by second placed St. George’s in a quite match. Thus the Saints halted Qormi’ triumphal march as the Yellows failed to notch their fifth consecutive victory.
The first half was extremely balanced but Qormi completely dominated the second half going near on several occasions, even missing some glaring scoring chances, with Carmel Formosa the main culprit.
The first half was played on a very low key with both teams never giving away an inch and concentrating on midfield. Scoring chances were very rare and the few chances created were concentrated in the first twenty minutes.
Qormi had more of the ball but the Saints were always dangerous on their breaks with Anizoba a constant menace.
On 11 minutes Anizoba’s dangerous cross was met by Caruana who shot slightly wide. On 16 minutes Qormi went close with a Farrugia free kick going wide. Three minutes later Dozie’s good run on the left was finished with a good cross towards Carmel Formosa who missed a sitter in front of goal.
On 21 minutes Luke Agius tried his luck from the edge of the area but his shot went wide. Qormi held the upper hand for the rest of the first half but failed produce decent scoring chances.
In the second half Qormi increased the pressure with Chetcuti creating havoc in the Saints’ defence. Formosa missed another good opportunity after a good move by Chetcuti. On 53 minutes Joseph Farrugia’s shot was blocked by the St. George’s custodian.
St. George’s hit back with a good effort from Anizoba that was well saved by Matthew Farrugia.Formosa missed another good opportunity on 65 minutes when he failed to connect to a good cross from the left by Lee Grima.
Qormi were now completely dominating and St. George’s goalkeeper Gatt effected a brilliant save off a good shot by Grima. From the resulting corner substitute Borg Olivier headed over the bar from an ideal position.
The Saints continued to control their opponents’ sterile pressure to gain a precious point to keep in touch with the same leaders.
In the other BOV First Division match, bottom sides Mellieha and St Patrick’s drew 1-1.
Wayne Borg St John scored the first goal for Mellieha after seven minutes.
St Patrick drew level on 73 minutes with a Chris Grech overhead kick.
