Entitled Trilogy, Clinton Carter’s exhibition, which is taking place at the Workers’ Memorial Building, Valletta, consists of 25 works and includes nudes, landscapes and still-life drawings and paintings.

All works were selected from his portfolio using a variety of media such as oils, chalk and charcoal, ink, pencil, collage and pastels. His main interest is painting and drawing the human body, which he does on a regular basis at the studio of artist and restorer Alfred Briffa in Mosta.

Since he is deeply involved in physical training and the body building culture, the artist, who hails from Senglea, encounters people with different body types. He is not interested in depicting a particular type of physique. In fact, he wishes to experience and explore a variety of people. His vigorous brushwork is not only meant to demonstrate his ability in observing reality as it is, but it is the medium that bridges the interplay between his inner feelings and emotions and his models. Another section in this exhibition is dedicated to landscape and still life paintings. The landscapes were carried out on site and were treated differently under different atmospheric conditions. Apart from representing scenes from Senglea, the artist provides the viewer with an occasional shift from urban to rural environment where he feels calm, peaceful and in harmony with nature away from the rapid daily routine imposed by contemporary society. Having disaffection with repetitive still life subjects such as fruit bowls and flowers, the artist selected objects that are often neglected and considered as unpleasant.
