The Gold Award in this year’s edition of the Malta Journalism Awards (MJA), which is awarded to a person deemed to have gone beyond the requirements of normal journalistic practice during his or her career, was given to veteran Labour journalist and columnist Lino Cassar. The jury of the Gold Award was made up of MediaToday managing director Dr Roger Degiorgio, l-orizzont editor Frans Ghirxi and President Emeritus Professor Guido de Marco as chairman. The award was presented by President Emeritus de Marco during the presentation ceremony held on 31 October at Robert Samut Hall in Floriana. Previous winners were Fr Joe Borg (1998), Anton Cassar (1999), Frank Attard (2000), J. G. Vassallo (2001), Anthony Montanaro (2002), John Manduca (2003), Charles Grech Orr (2004), Pawlu Carachi (2005) and Paul Saliba (2006). The MJA, which recognise journalistic excellence across print, broadcast and online media, are organised annually by the Institute of Maltese Journalists (IGM) with the financial assistance of various sponsors.
