All waste management facilities (including scrap-yards) that were established and operational before 1 May 2004 and do not have a valid Waste Management Permit are being given the opportunity to register with the Malta Environment and Planning Authority (Mepa) and be considered authorised facilities under conditions stipulated by paragraphs 40 and 41 of Schedule 1 in Legal Notice 106 of 2007.
Registration of such sites will be accepted provided that:
1) The site and operation was covered by a valid development permit prior to 1 May 2004;
2) The site operator applies for a Waste Management Permit from the Malta Environment and Planning Authority prior to 10 February 2008.
All registered facilities will be considered as authorised facilities under this exemption until a regular Waste Management Permit is issued or their application for a permit is rejected by Mepa.
Applications for temporary registration are to reach the Authority’s offices by not later than 10 February.
Application forms for the registration of waste management facilities are available at Mepa’s offices in Floriana and Victoria, Gozo and may also be downloaded from www.mepa.org.mt
